Protecting Our Waterways: The Mission of Northshore Riverwatch
Louisiana’s rivers and floodplains are among the most ecologically and economically valuable resources in the state. Yet, they face increasing threats from rapid urbanization, pollution, and improper development in flood-prone areas. Northshore Riverwatch is dedicated to protecting these vital ecosystems, advocating for responsible development, and ensuring that local communities have a voice in environmental decision-making.
Our Mission and Impact
Northshore Riverwatch is a non-profit organization committed to the conservation and restoration of waterways across the Florida Parishes. Our work focuses on:
Floodplain Management – Preventing harmful development that increases flood risks for residents.
Water Quality Monitoring – Tracking pollution sources and advocating for stronger environmental enforcement.
Community Advocacy – Empowering residents to engage with local government on zoning, permits, and environmental regulations.
Conservation Efforts – Restoring native habitats, including historic longleaf pine savannas, and protecting critical riverfront land.
Fighting for Responsible Development
One of the biggest challenges facing our region is the push for high-density development in floodplains. Overdevelopment in these areas not only destroys natural flood buffers but also puts entire communities at risk. Northshore Riverwatch actively monitors rezoning proposals and works with local residents to challenge irresponsible land-use decisions. By raising awareness, presenting scientific data, and mobilizing public participation, we’ve successfully opposed projects that threaten our waterways.
Holding Polluters Accountable
Water quality is a cornerstone of healthy communities and ecosystems. We keep a close watch on discharge permits from wastewater treatment facilities, landfills, and industrial sites. When violations occur, we report them, demand enforcement, and push for policy changes that strengthen protections for our rivers and wetlands.
Conserving and Restoring Natural Habitats
Beyond advocacy, Northshore Riverwatch actively works on conservation projects. Our recent acquisition of 60 acres along a key river corridor will allow for habitat restoration, invasive species removal, and long-term environmental stewardship. Through partnerships with Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and local stakeholders, we are developing a management plan to protect this land for future generations.
